Instant Noodles

You only know joy
When you’ve caught a whiff,
Of instant noodles as you add in spices.
You only know sorrow,
When the sauce mixes with water,
Instead of diffusing slowly into the noodles.
You only know fear,
When you impatiently put some in your mouth,
Heat and spice threatening to make it explode.
You only know pain,
When you’ve slurped it up so fast,
A drop of scalding hot liquid leaps into your eye.
You only know satisfaction,
When you look down at an almost-empty bowl,
Fork desperately trying to shovel up last morsels.
You only know how to live,
When you’ve placed your lips on the rim of the bowl,
Tilting your head back, feeling the liquid burn down to your stomach.
